Can you not just ask her to pass the shoes to you. Just explain that you appreciate them from an artistic point of view and hate the thought of them being reduced to a pulp. Ask her nicely if you could have them for your collection, maybe have a cabinet somewhere in your house/apartment with prime examples on display to show her you have a genuine interest, maybe with some shoe related books and literature around. A couple of framed old shoe advertisements on the walls. That way she will see you are genuine, you could always suggest that as the guardian of her cast offs if she ever wanted to borrow a pair for something you would be more than happy for her to do that. That way you would not need to look through the bins in secret and there would be no chance of any poor new shoes getting unnecessarily reduced to a pulped mush in the garbage trucks jaws!
