Oh wow! You have a goldmine there. Other people have taken screen shots of larger photos with success for a resize. Would love to see more.

I had the same issue with image size. You can use Photoshop to reduce the size, that's how I do :
Open image on Photoshop -> File -> export -> export as . Change format to Jpg and use the scaling tool to get just below 1Mb (i'm at 50% - 33% scale)
