Like a lot of software, it's free to try out for as long as you like. To get more of the good stuff, such as clothing, rooms and furniture, you must buy these from the IMVU catalog using "credits", the currency of IMVU. You can buy credits from resellers, do various activities for free credits, and if you're artistic, you can sell your own 3D items in the catalog to earn credits as a passive income stream (that's what I do). Also, they keep the "adult" themed items behind a $20 paywall, but it's a one-time charge, not recurring.

Thank you. I'm always leery because 3D anime doesn't appeal to everyone, and I get complaints that the photos aren't "real" women or "real" boots, they're not interested. And that's OK, I get it. But you can act out a lot of fantasy situations in IMVU that can't really be reproduced in real life (IRL) such as giantess fantasies, and lots of people are into role play there, so it's pretty interesting at times.
