You upload the file, and the site gives you a special URL to post so that others may download. You are also given an "erase" link so you can remove the file later if you want it available for a limited time only.
I use Mediafire for certain files (OpenCanvas event files) linked to my artwork site that need special viewers not supported by the site software.
