Simple answer, but I like to build up some precum before any footwear fun. I've tried to play with them after licking the insole, but the viscosity isn't thick enough. To lube the inside, I prefer my own brand, but I'm not always ready right out of the gate. So, it's a bit of a pregame setup I do beforehand.

If the shoes are new, I wear them around the house or for short periods of time before using them for the intended activity. This help prevent blisters and discomfort.
